The oldest of six children, Rex learned early the importance and rewards of hard work and perseverance. His interest in building began at the young age of six when his family moved into the second house in a new subdivision. For many years after, he was drawn into the community's development, fascinated at the construction process, visiting the sites frequently until finally workers gave him a nail apron and allowed him to nail subfloors.

At the age of 15, Rex began working for his father as a carpet installer during summer vacations, after school and on weekends. Builder Charles Spartz became Rex's mentor; Charles performed most of the work himself and answered Rex's many questions.

In 1971, Rex's first spec home sold before its completion and his backer agreed to finance a second and then a third home- a custom home. Rex worked seven days a week and, like his earlier role model, performed most of the work himself; laid the foundation, framed, painted, bricked, finished, and trimmed the house. A perfectionist, Rex watched over even the smallest of details. He then began building two homes at once and the company grew.

Today, with over 50 years in the business, Rex celebrates the success of having evolved from a one- man operation into one of the most successful custom building companies in Indianapolis.
